"The Ultimate Guide to Poon Hill: A Beginner-Friendly Trek in Nepal" |
Hello all !
Feeling worn out by Kathmandu’s hustle and bustle, I knew it was time for a change of scenery. After a little research, I found the Poon Hill Trek—a short, beautiful trek packed with views that you’ll be dreaming about for days. This five-day adventure has just the right mix of challenge and ease, perfect for anyone who wants a taste of the Himalayas
without a long, dragged-out trek.
If you’re considering starting the Poon Hill trek in November or December, this blog is for you. Here’s my itinerary, with a few tips to make your journey unforgettable.
Poon Hill Trek Itinerary |
Day 1: Kathmandu to Pokhara
Begin your journey with a drive or quick flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara.
The excitement builds as you arrive in this lakeside city, perfect for some rest and recharge before hitting the trail.
Day 2: Pokhara to Birethanti, Trek to Tikhedhunga and Ulleri
From Pokhara, catch a bus or jeep to Birethanti, the official starting point of the trek. While some start from Nayapul, I’d recommend Birethanti for a more scenic route.
Start your hike from Birethanti to Tikhedhunga (about 2-3 hours), where you can stop for a well-deserved lunch. Afterward, gear up for a steep climb to Ulleri. This 3-4 hour stretch will test your stamina, but the views make every step worth it!
Day 3: Ulleri to Nangethanti to Ghorepani
Today’s hike is easier on the knees and filled with beautiful scenery. Pass through Nangethanti and continue on to Ghorepani, a picturesque village surrounded by forests. Here, you’ll rest up for the main event the following day!
Day 4: Ghorepani to Tadapani
Wake up around 5 a.m. for the highlight of the trek: a sunrise at Poon Hill! That 30-40 minute uphill walk may make you question your life choices, but don’t worry—it’s all worth it. Watching the sun rise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges is pure magic.
After taking a million photos, head back to Ghorepani for breakfast before starting your trek to Tadapani. This trail winds through the forest, with occasional glimpses of the snow-capped peaks keeping the adventure alive.
Day 5: Tadapani to Ghandruk to Pokhara
Descend from Tadapani to Ghandruk, a charming village with fantastic mountain views. Here, you can grab lunch and even try on traditional Gurung attire for memorable photos. Once you’ve soaked up the views, make your way back to Pokhara.
This is one of Nepal’s best short treks, with flexibility to suit your schedule. You can extend it to 10 days for a more relaxed pace or condense it into three days if you’re short on time. I hope this guide inspires you to set out on the Poon Hill trek—happy trekking!
