From Cycling Plan to Unexpected Jungle Hike – Tarkeshwar mahadev Adventure

We’re back again after another successful weekend escape — this time from Telkot to Changu Narayan… and honestly, it didn’t go as planned — which made it even better.

Everyone’s been busy lately with work schedules, and planning a proper hike or ride has been tough. So instead of overthinking, I decided — let’s just go. The plan? A simple cycling trip to Tarekhshwar Mahadev Temple.

I made a quick group, asked a few friends if they were free… and boom — 6 of us were ready.

The Plan vs Reality

The original route was supposed to be: Balaju Bypass → Mudkhu → Osho Tapoban → Bhuvaneshwor → Tarekhshwar Mahadev

But you know how it goes… someone suggests a different route, and suddenly the adventure begins.
This time we went: Balaju Bypass → Dharmasthali → Kavresthali → random village and hike up to Tarekhshwar mahadev 😅

No clear route, just vibes. We kept asking locals along the way until we reached a small village near a local temple, and we parked our mountain bike — that’s where things changed.

From Cycling… to Hiking Mode ON

We parked our mountain bikes near the local village and started walking, thinking it would be short to the Tarekhshwar temple.
But it wasn’t.
What followed was nearly 2 to 2.5 hours of uphill hiking through a raw, untouched jungle trail. Locals told us we had taken a harder route, but honestly… it was worth every step.

A 30-minute ladder climb (yes, actual climbing!)
  • Dense jungle with huge trees and cool shade
  • Narrow trails guiding us deeper into nature
  • Wild aiselu berries along the way — perfect snack break!
The weather helped too. It had rained the night before, so the air was fresh and the views were crystal clear.

And... actual hiking begins from here. The weather was so clear that we could see Kathmandu from the spot.

After lots of uphill, friends got tired....

We’d heard that hugging a tree can help reduce stress… so of course, we all gave it a try 🌳😄
Taking a moment to connect with nature, breathe deeply, and pause — maybe that’s all we needed to feel a little more relaxed and refreshed.

We also found some fresh aiselu along the trail — the perfect little boost to recharge us during the hike.

Pushing Through & Reaching the Top

Some of the crew signed up only for cycling — not hiking 😄 - but slowly, steadily, with a bit of motivation… we all made it.
That feeling when you finally reach the top? Always worth it.

At Tarekhshwor Mahadev Temple, we explored:
  • The peaceful temple area
  • A cave nearby
  • Curious visitors asking us “which route did you take?”
Most people came from easier motorable roads — meaning they completely missed this hidden jungle trail.

Why This Route is Special

Honestly, I’d highly recommend this route if:
  • You love offbeat hiking trails
  • You enjoy a bit of challenge
  • You want amazing city views from above Kathmandu
This is not your usual ride — this is the kind of trail most people don’t even know exists.

The Way Back

Since our bikes were parked below, we had no choice but to return the same way — but this time it was all downhill (thankfully!).
In total:
👉 Around 23 km of cycling + hiking combined
Tiring? Yes.
Worth it? 100%.

Final Thoughts

We were just 6 friends, no big plan, no expectations — and it turned into one of the most memorable rides + hikes. Some struggled, some doubted… but we all made it, laughed, explored, and enjoyed every bit of the journey.

A Small but Important Message

During the hike, we noticed a lot of plastic waste scattered along the trail, which was honestly disappointing to see in such a beautiful place.
Let’s all do our part 🙏
Please follow the Leave No Trace principle — carry your waste back, avoid littering, and help keep our surroundings clean.

And... Hope this blog didn’t bore you halfway through 😄
More adventures (and unexpected route mistakes) coming soon! I’ll be writing more and organizing upcoming hikes and rides — so if you’re ready to sweat, laugh, and maybe get lost with us… sign up!
